Potential uses for LangCommLingo - Telephone Interpreting Service for travellers

We ran a competition on the WAYN social networking site from December 2009 to January 2010 asking for the most interesting uses for LangCommLingo. Below are a selection of the many many entries we received.
Thank you to everyone who entered.

"The interpreter would save the Germans from correcting my grammar (not “Der Auto ist kaput - Das Auto ist kaput”) and let them get on with fixing my car; would save the Italians from waving their hands at me; enable me to be clear when telling Turkish carpet salesmen I don’t want another carpet..”

"Asking for directions at an international airport the next time I’m abroad as I don’t usually travel abroad, it would be my second time and big airports are quite scary and confusing! I could literally ask the person sitting next to me which could be anyone from across the globe to help me out!”

”I definitely would use when travelling by Taxi. Also when booking a room at a hotel, wouldn’t want to end up in the broom closet for the night. Lastly when shopping, they can spot a tourist and will take advantage of you for sure. Wouldn’t want to pay $100.00 for $10.00 knick knacks.”

“I find it would be a great deal of fun to have two of these things and perform in a public venue perhaps in Amsterdam or Mallory Pier in Key West and use one to talk to people from all over the world and pass the other to people to allow them to speak to me as they translate their languages - We’d be talking to each other using our interpreters! Now that’s entertainment!”

"this tool could prove very useful when I'm teaching High School German to ESL Students"

"When I next go travelling I would use the LangCommLingo to translate in Portuguese the best kept secret surf breaks in Brazil. I would use it to find an uncrowded beach break where it would just be a spot known to locals for me and my buddies to catch some world class waves in warm water. That would be radical"

"I will use in restaurants and bars but also when im exploring and haggling"

"I would use it to find out and order the best local dish for myself and the love of my life"

"knowledge from LangcommLingo will help me have the much more refreshing, commanding and controlling power over the languages of other countries' travellers to direct , inform, and chat/ converse and make people who are lost, who need interpreters, guide people to their destinies and make the most and best out of their travels. With it i can make travellers feel at home everywhere they are and let them enjoy their stay during travel"

"Would mostly use it for directions or for questions regarding interests. Will be able to communicate freely... so awesome"

"to help me understand other languages so that when I talk to people from other place I will not have to find one that can speak english too"

"I travel all over Asia and this would be an outstanding product to have. I miss not having it already and have never even used one yet"

"I live abroad and would use the LangCommLingo on a daily basis, it looks like a wonderful item"

"In a busines meting with chinese people"

"Well, i guess i would use LangcommLingo to avoid an undesirable marriage... such as: I am in Egypt and like to rent a camel, but instead of it they understand that i am looking forward for a wife! This would be very ambarrasing!"

"This would come in very useful for me as i work in a environment where i come across people speaking different languages. Using this amazing tool, i could interact much better with those people and satisfy their needs greater!"

"I would use the translator to learn different languages with my girlfriend and become an interpreter"

"If you're stuck in Syrian police station, because you were trying hitch-hike, and instead got a ride on a police car! Useful to try and explain the situation to them in their language"

"Being retired this would make traveling the WAYN World a much easier way to travel. Being able to ask the right questions in a foreign country alleviates an enormous amount of possible problems"

"I would love to use the LangCommLingo and go on a road trip to the Silk Road and traverse thru the areas where the traders in olden times trod. I will be able to communicate with the people there and write my own book "Travel on the Silk Road - The LangCommLingo way"!

"I would listen to comedy shows and music to find out all the dirty words in different languages! Also, jokes are the last thing you learn to understand when learning another language"

"LangCommLingo it would be great for me because I've finished my English course 2 years ago and sometimes I feel like my Italian friend who went to Malta completely lost in translation... Help me please!!!

WARNING - Video cartoon with some strong language (but very funny none the less) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1TnzCiUSI0

"Stood in the middle of a remote Thai village bartering for my dinner, LangCommLingo would make it much easier not to get some strange insects on a plate"

"Talking to people in their own language is something that is appreciated the world over, it shows that you are trying to be involved in the culture you are visiting, that is such a cool thing to do. I would try use LangCommLingo all the time when abroad as it would enable me to interact with the people & country visiting fuller"

"I would draw picture of what i wanted to say to them. Or show them a example of what i was trying to say in a visual manner. I would use pictures using, paper, pen, etc"

"I would use you guys for clothes shopping in China to make sure I'm getting stuff that are good quality"

"Making direct and dynamic worldwide communication feasability a reality!"

"I would use langCommLingo when i some day go to Europe and Norway so that i can speak and understand the different languages and go see the non-english speaking parts of the town"

"in my line of work (medical) interpreters are hard to find and in situations are needed quickly. With a simple conference call even a life treatening situation could be resolved"

"Langcommlingo can be used even if you are in a hotel and asking for a tooth brush or insect spray. booking a ticket or being in hospital is a priority.negotiating with a taxi for a ride or price can be difficult without interpreter, eg visiting Russia"

"LangCommLingo can be utilized in the educational system by teachers and students to better open up communication in a multicultral classroom. Such as a meet and greet (ice breaker) to hopefully lessen the gap between cultures and create a more friendly community"

"I do quite a bit of traveling for work and often end up in countries with more obscure languages (in a Canadian perspective). One instance I remember was being sent to Korea by myself. I landed in Incheon airport and got into the city where I knew no one and not knowing the language, couldn't find anyone to help me. I eventually had to go to a bank and found a customer that knew English. If I hadn't found that person, I would have been stuck in Korea with no help"

"I do modeling across the country and there's often situations where you meet people who can't speak any languages that I can (swedish, english, finnish, german, french). Then I'd definetly need a help of LangCommLingo services"

"I'm going to Indonesia for a trip this coming summer, and i don't speak Indonesian at all. So i think LangCommLingo is gonna help me a lot when I'm in Indonesia"

"I visit Hungary with friends but find the language impossible so its hard to pick up a few words, my friends, useless as i am with the language head for our flight with nothing more than a few clothes and of course ipods. when we arrived it impossible we cant even ask for directions, lucky i subscribed to LangCommLingo i simply rang, entered my details within seconds an interpreter told me what the person said our holiday was amazing and we never worried about the language barrier after that"

"You could use the Lingo in any country that you don't speak the language or you don't speak it well. It could help you interpret any kind of situation you may find yourself in"

"Well having a translator companion while travelling is very useful and handy but it should be a clear interactive device to enable the presenter to translate and convey his/her needs or message to the listener to comply and execute them correctly"

"With video conferencing for businesses and schools. It would be an asset for any person who can not have an interpreter with them in a time of need. I know it would have come in handy for me a few times at work. With school children it would give them a better understanding of foreign languages and learning how to communicate with others. This could lead to more advanced classes and skills for the future of our world & create ties with other nations. Or hope to"

"LangCommLingo being used in a different country like India at a restaraunt where am American customer offers to pay the restaraunt owner a $1000 if he could give him the recipe to the butter Chicken dish he just ordered. The owner who knows very little English & calls the chef but the chef knows the Hindi only. The day is saved by langCommLingo service which does the recipe translation and the owner gets 1000$ and gives the chef $500 from it"

iLingual: instantly speak another language through your iPhone

Here's an interesting piece posted yesterday on Geek.com
Just as a point of order I am NOT a regular subscriber to Geek.com but, of course, that's not wishing to be disrespectful to those who are.

So, will this new "App" be a rival to our LangCommLingo Telephone Interpreting service? Whilst clearly it has its uses and, as you'll see from the video, it is highly amusing I don't think it's the answer to a more serious situation. See what you think:

Without wishing to upset our Creative Department at Lingo, perhaps you folk will take a look at the video above also to see if you can pick up some tips!

LangCommLingo Creative Team try their hand at making a video

In an attempt to try and show potential new clients how our LangCommLingo Telephone Interpreting service works, our Creative Team tried their hand at making a few videos. Thankfully, with each attempt, they certainly improved their productions but I don't imagine they'll be making any Oscar acceptance speeches any time soon.
If you like a laugh, more so than seeing how effective Telephone Interpreting can be when you are travelling, then feel free to click on the links below.
Tell us what you think or send us in your own ideas and videos.
